ARLINGTON, Va. – JD Spain was officially sworn in to his new position by Arlington Circuit Court Clerk Paul Ferguson on Thursday, marking a significant step in local leadership with a commitment toward equity and inclusive policymaking. The well-attended ceremony, which saw political figures such as U.S. Rep. Don Beyer and Vice-Chair Takis Karantonis in attendance, was a testament to Spain’s strong community support.
Reverend DeLishia Davis opened the event with a poignant reminder of the community’s values, calling for justice and wisdom as Spain begins his term that will run through 2028. Spain, who has been deeply involved with the NAACP, emphasized policies that will benefit various populations within the county, including mental health initiatives, youth programs, and more affordable housing.
Spain recognized numerous individuals who have influenced his public service journey, including his family, who have provided unwavering support for over 32 years, and local leaders like Joan Mahal and Dr. Alfred Taylor. He also paid tribute to the late Judge William T. Newman Jr. and Kent Carter, whose daughter he pledged to support.
During his address, Spain encouraged open dialogue within the community, distancing his approach from media sensationalism. He stressed an ongoing effort to prevent Arlington from becoming exclusive, highlighting the importance of diversity and public safety with accountability.
Spain will be hosting an organizational meeting on January 6 to rally community support and set the agenda for what is hoped to be a progressive tenure. The meeting will be followed by refreshments and a photo opportunity with the new official and constituents.
